NY Smoke Damage Clean Up
Soot and smoke odors are unpleasant results of a house fire. Unfortunately, soot and smoke smell can be hard to remove from household textiles. These textiles include carpet, upholstered furniture, and draperies. Be careful not to touch these textiles when they have soot on them because soot is often oily and will smear and stain if mishandled. The best way to handle household textiles and everything else after a house fire is to hire a professional fire restoration company to do the work. There is a lot to know about how to properly restore a house and all the things in it after it is fire damaged. The professionals have the know-how and equipment to take care of things. Call your homeowner's insurance company to report the fire and start a claim so it will be possible to hire the help you need.
If you decide to do some of the fire restoration yourself there are some things you can do. Open windows and doors in the house to let air circulate and dissipate the smoke odor. Dry anything that got wet from putting out the fire. Soot can be removed from household textiles using a vacuum with a Hepa filter. Suction the soot off the carpet, furniture piece, of drapery using the vacuum hose. Keep the hose an inch or so away from the material so it never touches. Remember that touching the textile can smear the soot and cause staining. Cover carpet with plastic once the soot is removed to prevent more damage from people tracking soot and dirt back onto it.
Once the soot is removed from the household textiles the smoke smell needs to be eliminated. This should be done before any of these items are cleaned. Sometimes trying to clean household textiles which still have a smoky smell will cause the smell to be permanently set in the item. This happens when the cleaning solutions react and hold the odor in the fabric instead of getting rid of it. Using fabric fresheners such as Febreeze will only mask odors. Trying to use regular perfumes, air fresheners, and deodorizers will also only mask the smoke smell temporarily. Even worse, these products can interact with the smoke odor and cause an even worse smell.
The only way to really get rid of the smoke odor is to have all the household textiles put through an ozone treatment. You will have to hire professional fire restorers to do this treatment because they will have the ozone generator that is needed to perform the treatment. The fire damage experts can come to your home to do the ozone treatment or you can have them take the items to their building which is equipped with an ozone room for this purpose. If the treatment is done at your home a tent is set up to hold all the household textiles. The ozone generator is turned on and the process starts. The generator breaks down the smoke molecules to eliminate the smell. An oxidizing agent creates the smell of fresh air after a rainstorm thus deodorizing the textiles. Once this has been done the textiles should be taken to expert cleaners to be restored. If you have this process done at the fire restoration company's building they may well be able to clean the household textiles on site.
